چکیده

We revisit the classical problem of speed selection for the propagation of disturbances in scalar reaction-diffusion equations with one linearly stable and one linearly unstable equilibrium. For a wide class of initial data this problem reduces to finding the minimal speed of the monotone traveling wave solutions connecting these two equilibria in one space dimension. We introduce a variational characterization of these traveling wave solutions and give a necessary and sufficient condition for linear versus nonlinear selection mechanism. We obtain sufficient conditions for the linear and nonlinear selection mechanisms that are easily verifiable. Our method also allows us to obtain efficient lower and upper bounds for the propagation speed. c © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Multiplicity of supercritical fronts for reaction-diffusion equations in cylinders

We study multiplicity of the supercritical traveling front solutions for scalar reaction-diffusion equations in infinite cylinders which invade a linearly unstable equilibrium. These equations are known to possess traveling wave solutions connecting an unstable equilibrium to the closest stable equilibrium for all speeds exceeding a critical value. We show that these are, in fact, the only trav...

Propagation Phenomena in Reaction-advection-diffusion Equations a Dissertation Submitted to the Department of Mathematics and the Committee on Graduate Studies of Stanford University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy

Reaction-advection-diffusion (RAD) equations are a class of non-linear parabolic equations which are used to model a diverse range of biological, physical, and chemical phenomena. Originally introduced in the early twentieth century as a model for population dynamics, they have been used in recent years in diverse contexts including climate change [8], criminal behavior [11], and combustion [72...

Linear spreading speeds from nonlinear resonant interaction∗

We identify a new mechanism for propagation into unstable states in spatially extended systems, that is based on resonant interaction in the leading edge of invasion fronts. Such resonant invasion speeds can be determined solely based on the complex linear dispersion relation at the unstable equilibrium, but rely on the presence of a nonlinear term that facilitates the resonant coupling. We pro...

Positivity-preserving nonstandard finite difference Schemes for simulation of advection-diffusion reaction equations

Systems in which reaction terms are coupled to diffusion and advection transports arise in a wide range of chemical engineering applications, physics, biology and environmental. In these cases, the components of the unknown can denote concentrations or population sizes which represent quantities and they need to remain positive. Classical finite difference schemes may produce numerical drawback...

We have studied the formation of relativistic solitary waves due to nonlinearinteraction of strong electromagnetic wave with the plasma wave. A set of equations consisting ofscalar and vector potentials together with a third order equation for the enthalpy inphoton gas plasma is obtained analytic...
